The company began in 1955 when Arlington resident and Landscape Architect Gene Schrickel teamed with engineer Frank Smith to form Schrickel and Smith. In 1957, the company became Gene Schrickel and Associates. Albert W. Rollins, P.E partnered with Schrickel in 1967 and the firm became Schrickel, Rollins and Associates, Inc.
The 60’s were the age of youth, as 70 million children from the post-war baby boom became teenagers and young adults. The country became more and more concerned with quality of life and the environment.
When asked what SRA was like from 1955 throughout the 60′s, several comments were consistent. Smoking at your desk was common. In fact, that was true of most American workplaces. The company owners had offices, but the majority of employees were at desks in a large open room. SRA has always been a conservative firm with a strong ethic of “work hard/play hard.” Therefore instead of going out for drinks, one would more likely find our partners playing golf, tennis or softball with clients. Having the appropriate attire in your car along with sports equipment was a requirement. No one ever knew how the day would end.

Martha Rollins:“It was something to be proud of!”
Helen Schrickel:“I would say hard work and honesty.
D’Ann Besley:“I think integrity and quality.”
