The Martin Luther King, Jr. Sports Center at the 300-acre Reserve is the first athletic complex in the nation to be certified as an Audubon International Signature Cooperative Sanctuary. Phase I of the sports center design features a complex of six lighted ball diamonds for girls’ and boys’ teams and a playground. The ballfields were designed in such a way that all out of play areas are either left in their native state or seeded with drought-tolerant grasses and wildflowers. The playground was constructed using more than 80% recycled materials. All storm water from the site runs through a biofilter before it enters into a creek and leaves the site. Buildings were constructed with sustainable materials as required by the Audubon program.
