Triggered by frequent flooding complaints from local Arlington residents, the McKinney Street drainage project will provide vital improvements to an undersized earthen channel that feeds into Rush Creek. With 52 residences that abut the half-mile reach of the creek between Randol Mill Road and Sanford Street, coordination and communication with property owners and City staff played a significant role in the design of these improvements. This project, scheduled for construction in late 2013, includes a three acre-foot detention pond with a unique outfall structure that will regulate flow between the existing earthen channel and a proposed 3,000 linear foot parallel underground system that ranges in size from a 6’x5’ to a 10’x6’ box culvert. SRA analyzed drainage areas and performed hydraulic calculations to resolve these on-site flooding issues without altering downstream conditions during significant rainfall events.
