The 85-acre park site is located in a fast-growing area of the City where parkland is needed. The site is a flood control detention pond facility that was constructed by the Corps of Engineers. The challenge was to utilize as much land as possible for recreational facilities without putting people or property at risk of damage from flooding. The final solution included a 30,000 SF recreation center, parking, one soccer field, two practice baseball fields, a playground, a picnic pavilion and a network of trails that serves three levels of ability. SRA worked with Parkhill, Smith and Cooper on this project. SRA provided master planning for the park, detailed design of the recreation facilities and landscape development which included a creative maze, rock climbing area and playground.
The site is commonly known as the “Three Hills” area of the city. The detention pond was formed by constructed dams between the prominent hills. This project is exemplary of an adaptive use of property dedicated originally to flood control into park facilities for the benefit of the residents.
